ISRHML
The International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation

Nominations for Position: President

Richmond Aryeetey

My vision for ISRHML is a truly global, inclusive, and collaborative society that advances excellence in human milk and lactation research while deliberately nurturing the next generation of scientists—especially from underrepresented regions. ISRHML must not only generate knowledge but also build people, institutions, and bridges across the world.

As indicated in the 2022-2026 Strategy plan, I will advance our journey towards greater diversity and inclusion as a core part of ISRHML’s leadership, membership, and scientific activities. This will Require intentional representation from low- and middle-income countries, diverse disciplines, and varied career stages in committees, conference programming, and decision-making structures. ISRHML should reflect the global populations we serve and the varied contexts in which breastfeeding and lactation research matter.

A central priority of my interest in the governance of ISRHML will be to enable more early-career scientists to pursue and sustain careers in human milk and lactation research. I will champion and build on existing efforts regarding

  • Structured mentorship linking early-career researchers with established leaders
  • Dedicated funding and travel support for students and postdoctoral fellows, especially from LMICS
  • Skills-building opportunities in grant writing, publishing, and leadership, ethics, and knowledge translation. This will be achieved by addressing barriers and providing clear pathways to enable  ISRHML secure the future of Lactation research.

I am interested in and will actively promote equitable collaboration between researchers in the Global North and South. This will be achieved by  encouraging co-created research agendas, fair authorship practices, shared data ownership, and mutual learning. ISRHML can serve as a trusted platform for partnerships that respect local knowledge while advancing global science.

Beyond conferences, ISRHML must invest in long-term capacity building. I will support initiatives such as regional training workshops, virtual learning platforms, and collaborative research networks that strengthen institutions and researchers where capacity is most needed. These efforts will ensure that human milk and lactation research translates into meaningful improvements in maternal and child health worldwide.

As President elect, I will lead with openness, integrity, and collaboration—listening to members, amplifying underrepresented voices, and positioning ISRHML as a global leader not only in science, but in equity, partnership, and impact.
